Wet weather has claimed another Victorian meeting after Friday’s Sale fixture was abandoned.

Racing Victoria called off Sunday’s Wangaratta fixture on Thursday afternoon after more than 100mm of rain fell in the area earlier in the week while 45mm of rain was enough to abandon the Sale meeting.

“The heavy rain throughout the state since the weekend has not only impacted on the ability of tracks to host scheduled meetings, but also the ability for us to transfer meetings to other venues,” RV chief operating officer Bernard Saundry said.

“We do not have a suitable venue in the state’s south-east to which we can transfer the Sale meeting and thus we have had to abandon it.

“The tracks in that part of the state are either too wet, undergoing standard autumn renovations, already hosting meetings in the coming days or in the case of Cranbourne and Stony Creek preparing for major meetings over the Labour Day long weekend.

“The option existed to transfer the meeting to the Geelong Synthetic track, however we have contacted the vast majority of trainers with runners engaged at Sale and have been advised that more than 50 percent of the 82 runners would be scratched thus destroying the meeting.”

Classy Commands gelding Soul was last seen winning the Listed MRC Kevin Heffernan Stakes in the spring and was in action at Meydan in Dubai overnight winning his first Northern Hemisphere start for Saeed Bin Suroor.

He contested the 1200 metre handicap on turf and cruised home to win by a length and a quarter for Frankie Dettori.

Soul is the first Australian Darley homebred to find the winner’s circle in Dubai, although the Sheikh will be hoping to build on that success sooner rather than later with local stars Helmet and Sepoy both scheduled to run at the Dubai World Cup meeting at the end of the month.

Soul has won four of 13 starts and placed a further four times, his biggest win in Australia coming in the Group II VRC Danehill Stakes.

He is one of five winners from Marvilha, a half-sister to Group I winners Denman and Preserve.

His sire Commands has been in the news this week through his star son Rain Affair and by virtue of having cracked 100 Australian winners for the season.

Best Backed – Rosehill Race 2 #2 Said Com. Although there has been a couple of scatchings, this up and coming galloper has already been backed from $2.4 into $2 on the back of a very impressive last start win and the 1500 looks to be ideal.

Oakleigh Plate tip (Caulfield Race 6) – #6 Bel Sprinter. Was very impressive last start coming from back in the field and storming home. He’s only tasted defeat once, is unbeaten at Caulfield and looks to be Group 1 standard.

Best Bet – Rosehill Race 1 #9 Dear Demi. The Clarry Connor’s trained filly looks well suited to the step up to 1200 after really winding up in the latter part of her races over shorter distances. She looks to be a standout bet.

Best Value – Caulfield Race 7 #2 Jimando. Fought on well last start after a good pace was set and looks to be good value at double figure odds. He had previously accounted for The Travelling Man easily back in October.

Lay – Caulfield Race 2 #1 Hot Spin. Looks to be unders against this field. He’s never won beyond 1000 metres, gives weight to the rest of the field and faces talented gallopers like It Is Written and Instalment.

Solid overnight rain has sent the Warwick Farm track rating into the heavy range for Saturday’s meeting.

Warwick Farm track manager James Cataldo said 26 mm fell at Warwick Farm in the last 24 hours, sending the track rating south to a heavy (8).

“It’s down into the heavy range now and the penetrometer is 5.90,” Cataldo said.

“I’m walking the track at the moment with Lindsay Murphy and it feels alright under foot, it’s not squelchy.

“Looking on the radar we might have a bit of luck. The rain seems to be breaking up and going around us but we’ll see how we go.”

The Bureau Of Meteorology forecast for the rest of Friday in the Liverpool area is a cloudy day with the rain easing to isolated showers by early evening. The predicted top temperature is a cool 21 degrees.

Saturday’s prediction is for a partly cloudy day with the chance of an isolated shower and a warmer 27 degrees.

The rail at Warwick Farm will be in the two-metre position.

Meanwhile, Canterbury has been downgraded to a heavy (9) for Friday night’s meeting due to the 35 mm of rain recorded overnight.

Down on the NSW South Coast, 29 mm fell at Kembla in the past 24 hours and the rating for Saturday’s provincial meeting has also been downgraded to a heavy (9).

A three-quarter brother in blood to dual hemisphere Group I winner So You Think has become the latest sales topper early on day two of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka.

Hong Kong agent Willie Leung, who 24 hours prior paid $650,000 NZ for another High Chaparral colt, paid $800,000 NZ for the High Chaparral colt out of the Nuclear Freeze mare, La Souvenir.

La Souvenir, a winner at 1400 metres, is a half-sister to So You Think.

Spirited bidding on the striking bay colt kicked off at $200,000 NZ before Leung landed the final blow.

In 2008, So You Think went through the same sales ring when Duncan Ramage of DGR Thoroughbred Services paid $110,000 NZ on behalf of Dato Tan Chin Nam.

Under the training of Australian racing’s living legend Bart Cummings, So You Think went on to win back-to-back Cox Plates before a controlling interest in the stallion was sold to Coolmore Stud.

The horse then ventured to Europe where he has added another three Group I wins to his resume. Now trained by Aidan O’Brien, So You Think is the early favourite for the Dubai World Cup in March.

Craig Newitt continued on his winning way riding Apprehend to an easy win in the Listed Werribee Cup (2699m) on Sunday. Newitt took advantage of the Tony Vassil-trained gelding’s insde draw to dictate the pace of the race right from the start.

Newitt said “This is the right sort of track for him, he’s an on-speed sort of horse and that was first time he’s drawn a gate in a long time.”

“They left us alone going down the straight the first time and he pricked his ears and he really relaxed underneath me and I was pretty confident.”

Apprehend led unchallenged until the final 600 metres where it opened a four-length lead around the home turn. Runner-up Hanks could only bring the lead back by one length over the last stage.

This win in the Werribee Cup brought up the eighth win from 50 starts for Apprehend and has taken it’s career stakes to over $500,000.

Newitt earned his 100th win for the season last Sunday in Hobart and took the Mick Price-trained Instinction across the line in the Listed Zedative Stakes on Australia Day.

After heavy rainfall in Brisbane for much of this week, wet weather has unfortunately affected the racing both tomorrow at the Australia Day Races, and also this Saturday.

Australia Day Races, Thursday Jan 26

After track inspections earlier today, no local racing will be held tomorrow at Doomben. Instead the day will operate as a phantom meeting with reduced venues and bars open but with interstate racing coverage and bookies on-course.

Venues open will include the Betting Ring Can Bar and Betting Ring BBQ as well as local bookmakers and limited Tote operators. Admission to Doomben Racecourse will be free. All horses nominated for Australia Day are able to renominate for the races this Saturday.

Saturday Raceday, Saturday Jan 28

The Saturday Raceday meeting has been transferred to Doomben Racecourse

Three-year-old horses Atlantic Jewel and Sepoy have been added as headline acts in the final International thoroughbred Rankings, joining champion mare Black Caviar to give a trio of Australian horses. Continue reading »
